Abstract

A solar energy collector incorporates a heater consisting of a tube through which a heat transfer liq. flows, lateral extension pieces and two storage vessels of different sizes. The tube is in the form of a close spiral, rectangular or square, with the min. radius of curvature at the angles. During winding, packing pieces are inserted at the angles allowing the radius to be obtd. by simply turning the flat horizontal coil on a rotating table. The packing pieces are removed when the winding is finished. The lateral extension pieces overlap when the collectors are assembled. The smaller storage vessel has a heating coil, through which water is circulated from the collector heating spiral by a pump controlled by a differential regulator; temp. indicators; an inlet at the bottom for cold water and an outlet at the top for hot water going to the bottom of the larger tank. The larger tank has an outlet at the top for hot water going to the system, a standby electric heater and a thermostat. The efficiency of collection is greater than in existing collectors because the tube is distributed over 95% of the collector surface, leaving only 5% uncovered, compared to 21.5% uncovered in existing collectors. The overlapping lateral extensions allow the collector to be used as waterproof roofing in place of tiles or slates. The fact that the first storage vessel is heated by the collectors and the second stores the hot water at a higher temp. than the collectors can give at the end of insulation gives greater energy recovery.
