Abstract

The pressed metal cover (1) may give access to manholes or inspection chambers to subterranean service installation e.g. drains. The eased cover has one or more recesses (2) for the accommodation of lifting bars (3), may also have downturned edge flanges and raised dimpling, and is pressed in a single operation. The cover is pressed from metal sheet or plate and the recesses (2) may be of semicircular form projecting beneath the surface. The lifting bars (3) once installed lie in the major plane of the cover traversing the centre of the recess (2). The pressing operation may also provide holes (6) on opposite edges of the recess and to accommodate the lifting bars (3). the holes (6) are fabricated to leave a flap (7) beneath and a curved formation overhead which are used to press-fix the lifting bar (3) in poistion. An alternative lifting hole detail may have pieces of winged and a slotted semicircular section fixed in cover slots.
