Abstract

Composite blocks are made by lining two faces of a mould with slabs of insulating material, such as expanded polystyrene, and then casting a load bearing material such as concrete into the centre of the mould. The insulation slabs feature grooves, pref. undercut, to key the core to the slabs. Pref. the edges of the slabs feature complementary tongue and groove profiles to engage adjacent slabs together. Short metal hooks may be supported as inserts in the foam slabs to become partially immersed in the cast core. The blocks assemble into walls without forming the thermal bridges typical of hollow cast blocks with insulating cores.
