Abstract
Particulate fillers for incorporation into polymer compsns. are made by mixing a particulate filler (Ie with a silylated polymer (II), such that the (II) makes up >5 wt. % esp. >50 wt. % of the (I). The silylated polymers are generally liq. cpds. which can be mixed with the filler without using solvents, which saves process stages such as drying and solvent recovery encountered in prior art processes for producing treated fillers. The process is esp. useful for treating Si-contg. fillers such as SiO2 for incorporation into vulcanisable natural and synthetic rubber compsns. The treated fillers improve the speed and homogeneity of mixing into the polymer matrix and reduce the viscosity of the mix, so that the energy requirement for mixing is reduced. The treated fillers have improved bonding to the polymer matrix and give vulcanised materials with increased tensile strength, resiliency, and tensile modulus.
