Abstract

A silicone rubber, useful for vibration damping, is obtained by curing a mixture comprising, by weight, (1) 100 parts of a diorganopolipiloxane having a viscosity of at least 10,000 cs. at 25 DEG C., wherein the organic radicals are monovalent hydrocarbon, haloaryl, perfluoroalkylethyl or cyanoalkyl radicals, (2) 10 to 200 parts of a benzene-soluble resin copolymer of SiO2 and R3SiO 1/2 units wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or perfluoroalkylethyl radical and where the ratio of R3SiO 1/2 units to SiO2 units is from 0.6/1 to 0.9/1 , and (3) 10 to 100 parts of a silica filler having a surface area of at least 50 sq. metres per gram and having attached to the surface thereof through SiOSi linkages organosilyl groups of the formula R1nSi-, in which each R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical of less than 7 C atoms and n is 2 or 3, and the ratio of R1nSigroups to SiO2 units of the silica being at least 0.06:1. The resin (2) may be made by the process set forth in Specification 706,719, and the fillers (3) are best prepared by the process described in Specifications 699,759 and 783,868. Non reinforcing fillers, pigments, oxidation inhibitors and compression set additives may also be added. The composition can be cured either by heating with organic peroxides or sulphur and/or organic sulphur compounds, or by using room-temperature curing systems. Examples are given.
