Abstract

1383212 Carbon fibre composites COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 15 March 1972 [19 March 1971] 11982/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A composite material comprising carbon fibres and resin is prepared by (a) treating carbon fibres with a homopolymer or an alternating copolymer, or the monomer(s) thereof, so as to chemically bond the homopolymer or copolymer to the fibres, and (b) incorporating the fibres with the homopolymer or copolymer chemically bonded thereto in a resin which is compatible with the homopolymer or copolymer. The polymer may be bonded by covalent bonds formed by radical grafting or anionic grafting or be bonded by hydrogen bonds, dipole-dipole bonds or saline bonds. In Eamples 1 and 2, maleic anhydride and styrene were radically grafted on to carbon fibres, the polymerization being thermally initiated. The fibres were then treated with a polyester resin and incorporated into a polyester resin, and the composite material allowed to harden in a mould. In Example 3, air-oxidized carbon fibres were dipped in a solution of maleic anhydride-styrene copolymer, incorporated into an epoxy resin after preimpregnation in a solution of resin, and hardened and moulded. In Examples 4 to 8 air-oxidized carbon fibres were salified with NaOH and immersed in a solution of a maleic anhydridestyrene or maleic anhydride-ethylene copolymer which had previously been salified with NaOH. The fibres are incorporated into epoxy and polyimide resin. Example 9 air-oxidized carbon fibres which had been refluxed with calcium acetate were immersed in an NaOH salified maleic anhydride-styrene copolymer solution, and the fibres incorporated into an epoxy resin. In Example 10, air-oxidized carbon fibres are immersed in a polyvinyl-4-pyridine solution and incorporated in a polyester resin. Graphitized fibres may be similarly treated.
