Abstract

The silencer for a vehicle engine has a cylindrical outer casing with an inlet chamber (5) at one end. The inlet chamber is connected to a buffer chamber (6) at the other end of the casing by an inner tube (7). This has perforations (8) in its wall at its far end. The outlet chamber (9) is formed at the centre of the silencer by internal walls (10a, 10b) on either side of the outlet stub (3). These walls extend to an intermediate tube (11) which has a perforated wall and surrounds the inner tube with an annular space (15) between them. A second resonator is thus formed by the chamber (14) round the end of the inner tube, the annular space (15) between the tubes and the chamber (16) at the inlet side of the intermediate tube.
