Abstract
Electrolytic cell cathode consists of a Fe or Ni (alloy) support with a surface coating of Gp. VIII metal(s), pref. Fe, Co or Ni, produced by electroplating or thermal deposition. This coating pref. is 5-100 mu m. thick. Cathode is used specifically for the electrolysis of NaCl (to NaOH) in a cell with an ion exchange membrane as diaphragm, pref. with a perfluorocarbon main chain and ion exchange gps. in the side chains. It meets the requirements for a low H2 over-voltage, hence low power consumption and durability. In an example, expanded steel was electroplated with Cu from an alkaline cyanide bath and then with Ni from a thiocyanate bath. When used in conjunction with a sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer ion exchange membrane for the electrolysis of aq. 5 N NaCl soln. to aq. 6 N NaOH soln., the concn. of hypochlorite formed remained low (1 ppm.) and the electrode potential constant.
