Abstract

PURPOSE:In an ion exchange membrane electrolysis of alkali metal salts, a potential between electrode is reduced by using meatllic anode and cathode which are electroplated in Ni(SCN)2. CONSTITUTION:An elecrolysis of alkali metal salts utilizes a perfluoro-skelton ion- exchange membrane having side chains, where fluorine atoms combine to carbon atoms that connect ion exchange groups. The electrolysis further utilizes as an anode and cathode, metal plates electroplated in a Ni(SCN)2 bath. The Process effectively prevents permeation of by-produced hypochlorite ions in anode zone, and accordingly maintains hypochlorite ion concentration in cathode zone below 1 ppm, thereby to protect Ni(SCN)2-plated cathode effectively. The process further allows the use of decreased electrode distance in the range of 1 to 4mm to lower voltage drop due to liquid resistance between electrodes.
