Abstract

A liq. controlled at the conservation temp. of the prod. is sprayed into the container to fill the space around the prod. with a mist of droplets. Air or oxygen is supplied to the container space when living prod. is being handled. When the lining prod is of marine origin the sprayed liq. is pref. seawater. Fresh water is used to spray prod. originating in fresh water. Temp. is controlled within a range pref. limited to -20 degrees C to +25 degrees C, i.e. usually between about +5 degrees and +20 degrees C for living prod. and about -2 degrees C to -10 degrees C for frozen fresh produce. The container floor pref. drains to an underfloor recirculating tank. Separate compartments of the container are pref. used to house motive power, refrigeration, pumping and air circulation units. A disinfectant can be dosed into the sprayed liq. to eliminate parasites the prod. The liq. can also be irradiated to deal with parasites. Used partic. transporting and/or storing fresh or living foods, partic. fish, shell fish, eels, and mocluses such as oysters, mussels etc. Self-contained units will handle eross prod. wt. of the order of 5 to 12 tonnes. Living and fresh foods can be safely kept in the container for up to 20 days.
