Abstract
Heat insulating or exothermic powders for use as covering powders for molten metal in ladles, inject moulds for continuous casting etc. are prepd. in the form of granules of silicate coated with slag powder or covering powder by forming droplets of silicate, powdering the slag onto the droplets then drying the granules obtd. The granules pref. consist of 10-30 nesp 13-17)% silicate and 80-90 (esp. 83-27)% slag or covering powder. The silicate used is pref. a Na or K silicate with a ratio SiO2/Na2O or K2O of 3-4. The granules, being coarser than the fine powder used in prior art are not carried away in the hot air and gas above the molten metal as is fine powder.
