Abstract

The fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine has a pump (1) supplying fuel through a three-way electro-magnetic valve (4) to a pressure intensifier (10). At the beginning of the injection cycle the line (4a) is connected to the line (4b) so that fuel flows into the chamber (15) and lifts the piston (11). At the same time fuel also flows through non-return valves (3, 6) and lifts the piston (9) to its upper position. A transducer (17) then transmits a signal which opens the line (4c) of the electrol-magnetic valve (4) so that fuel flows into the upper part (18) of the cylinder (10) forcing the pistons (11, 9) downwards. This action intensifies the pressure of the fuel flowing to the injector (12) in the ratio of the areas of the pistons (9, 11) but avoid pressure hammer in the pipe (13).
