Abstract

Dry organic fertiliser compsns. are made by mixing guano or droppings from wild or domestic birds in a mixer-grinder with a suitable amt. of a dry powdered organic material which completely absorbs the moisture from the base material, and continuing the mixing until a homogeneous dry powder is obtd. Pref. the bird droppings are fed from a closed container into a screw kneader together with the powdered organic drying agent, and the dry powder prod. from the mixer is fed directly into an extruder for the prodn. of pellets. Suitable drying agent is dried pulp and pips of grapes, from which the oil has previously been extracted. The fertiliser obtd. contains all the original useful chemical components and microorganisms (bacteria) contained in the bird droppings, so that the prod. has maximum effect when applied to the soil. The process is economical in the use of energy and avoids treating the droppings e.g. with lime, as in previous practice.
