Abstract

In order to adjust automatic gear changing transmission of road vehicles, it is necessary that the adjusting nut is self locking at any point along the length of a screw rod. This can be achieved by making the nut (1) from a resilient plastic tube with a thread (2) and a longitudinal split (3) extending the full length of the tube. For ease of adjustment, the gap (3) is forced open with a suitable tool and this allows the nut to rotate freely on the screwed rod (4). When the nut is in its required position, the gap is allowed to close so that the nut is locked to the rod.
