Abstract
The engine draws air in at constant pressure (3) and then compresses it adiabatically (4). Fuel is then introduced and burnt at constant volume (5) until the peak pressure (P1) is reached. Further fuel is burnt during the expansion stroke (6) so that this stroke is isothermal. At the end of expansion heat is rejected at constant volume (7) and finally the exhaust gases are discharged at constant pressure (8). 80% to 90% of the fuel is burnt during the constant volume phase (5) and the remainer during the isothermal expansion (6). The cycle reduces the peak pressure below that of other internal combustion engine cycles whilst maintaining a high temperature during expansion and this combination reduces the production of nitrous oxide in the exhaust.
