Abstract

A process and device for detecting and measuring liq. metal cores in slabs of large cross-sectional area during solidification in continuous casting are described. The prod. is subjected to an alternating magnetic field in the thickness direction, perpendicular to the direction of extraction at a point between two successive rollers. The magnetic field is then compared with a reference value representing the magnetic field obtd. from prods. in a state where they have a thickness relatively equal to the distance between a pair of rollers. A deviation signal is worked out; the signal representing the thickness variation of the prods. during their passage through the space between successive rollers. The signal is then visualised or used in the automatic control of the casting operation. Rapid detection and measurement of the liq.-zone thickness in the centre of the casting is possible without any risk to safety. Control of the continuous casting machine is possible.
