Abstract

Finely divided products for use as corrosion in inhibiting pastes contain at least one cation of variable valency and >=1 polyvalent anion. The active colloidal pigments are obtd. by the action of an polybasic acid e.g. phosphoric or chromic or a mixt. of polybasic acids on metal oxides or salts with volatile anions e.g. carbonates. Organic acids are used to prevent agglomeration of the particles, the acids being previously neutralised by NH3 or amines. The organic acid may be an unsatd. fatty acid e.g. oleic, linoleic acids or polyacids. The pastes contg. the colloidal active pigments may be used on metal surfaces after degreasing and opt. after phosphating. The pastes are diluted and applied by immersion or by spraying in the absence or presence of an electric current, the metal being the anode. The pastes may be incorporated in water-based paints during the grinding stage. The colloidal active pigments are situated at the pigment/binder interface. The pastes may be used in organic-solvent-based paints, the water having been replaced by an hydrophilic organic solvent.
