Abstract

The two stroke engine has a combustion chamber (1) formed in the cylinder head (2) attached to the cylinder block (3). Air Air which has been drawn into the crankcase through the port (14) is forced into the passage-way (12) by the downward motion of the piston (4). When the piston (4) is at bottom dead centre the air flows into the cylinder through the port (11) whilst the exhaust gases are expelled through the port (9). As the piston moves upwards the ports are closed but a layer of pure air remains above the piston. Air and fuel mixture from the carburettor flows into the duct (15) and through the open poppet valve (5). The discharge to the atmosphere of unburnt fuel is thus avoided.
