Abstract

The bulkhead or lead-through insulator allows an electrical conductor to pass through a metal partition. The insulator is intended to withstand the stresses induced by temperature and pressure differentials of two differing gases. The insulator is basically cylindrical, the conductor (11) and individual parts of the insulator being co-axial. Two ceramic end plates (13) are welded or soldered to an alloy skirt (14) which forms the seal with the bulk head (10). The internal ceramic section is in two parts (19a, b) leaving a gap between them at the insulator centre. These again may be held in place by a ring of solder or by having faces butted together.
