Abstract

Joints with a hollow housing with a internal flange for locating a tubular elastic element having two thick annular end zones linked by a relatively thin web at the room of a 'U' section annular channel where the web defines a minimum bore for the axial passage through the seal. After installation, the elastic core is compressed longitudinally to close the annular channel and displace the web radially inwards against the surface of the component traversing the internal passage. One face of the elastic element may be recessed to accept an annular metal press plate. If small relative to the housing, the core may be backed up by an ancillary annular plate to prevent excessive distortion away from the compression device. Core may be made of e.g. 'neoprene' (RTM-polychloroprene). It is used to provide a dry, presse tight seal for powder, control or communication cables traversing structural walls or hazard partitions, and can adapt to a wider range of cable size than a conventional external radial compression ring seal.
