Abstract

The ratchet spanner incorporates a tilting two-way lever ratchet (5) of 'V' shape. Clockwise rotation of the ratchet (5) causes the left leg end (5') to engage the teeth of an externally toothed socket (22) wheel (2), and limit the wheel to clockwise rotation. Reverse rotation has the reverse effect. The lever ratchet (5) is maintained in either alternative operational position by a straight blade spring (6). The spring (6) extends externally from the apex (53) of the 'Y' to a point (13) on the handle (1). The lever (5) is manipulated by a pin (7) projecting through a curved slot in a cover plate. The socket wheel may comprise an axle (2') with an axial socket (22) for the reception of bit spigots. The axle has an intermediary radial flange (2) in which the teeth are cut, and fits in a matching recess in the head of the handle (1).
