Abstract

The apparatus is used for selective protection of electrical power cables against faults to ground from one of several phases. The circuit provides protection for a minimum of three conductors in parallel and may be extended to cover conductors in excess of this number. Circulating current levels are detected in each cable without the use of extra lines or sensitive homopolar devices by measurement of the associated voltages. Selective interruption of the lines is controlled by transformer fed circuits providing a comparison and memory facility for each line with respect to the remainder. Premature operation of contactors is avoided by use of delay circuits, selection being achieved using logic techniques. The system detects the presence of fault currents (11 and 12).
