Abstract
An apparatus for purifying toxic effluent contg. hexavalent Cr continuously by electrodialysis comprises a treatment tank, connected to the effluent tank via pumps and filters, which contains an accessible cathode compartment which is separated from the anode comparment by anion exchange membranes. The cathode surface is low in relation to the anode surface to maintain a strong cathode polarisation by a continuous current from a low voltage generator. The impurities pptd. in the cathode compartment are removed by cleaning. The anion exchange membranes result in enrichment of hexavalent Cr in the anode compartment solution which is recycled as necessary via a control valve for further use. The effluent arises from pickling baths used in electroplating processing. Compared with previous treatments, the above is cheaper, recovers the hexavalent chromium for further use and is continuous. The effluent which is fed from the washing bath after pickling is recycled and therefore the rinsing bath is maintained at a constant quality level.
