Abstract

The safety tyre is fitted to the wheel rim (13) as a tubeless type. It is fitted with an internal membrane (15) across the inside of the tyre and has a non return valve (16) behind the membrane when the wheel is running forwards. The valve thus pumps the tyre when it is deflated, with air let into the tyre every time the membrane section touches the road, and causes a negative pressure inside the section (14d) above the valve. When the tyre is inflated normally the valve is shut. The valve element (17) can be set tangentially so that it is unaffected by centrifugal forces. The system enablesa safety tyre to be driven over longer distances, even with large punctures.
