Abstract

Anti-skid tyres for use on slippery or icy roads are produced from rubber compsns. contg. hard grains such as sand, corundum or ground glass. The grains are added during compounding after mastication of the elastomer/green rubber mixt. Tyre treads contg. the grains cause less damage to the road surface than tyres fitted with chains or spikes. The process can also be applied to the prodn. of other anti-skid surfaces e.g. shoe soles, clutches, drive belts, etc.
