' VEHICLE-TIRE.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. SOHLEI- CHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, county of Fairfield, and State of Conn, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Vehicle-Tires, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to a vehicle tire in which a plurality of fiat side by side transversely arranged members form the wall of an annular tread to ermit positive traction and prevent skidding or side slip.
The object of the invention is to arrange on the circumference of a casing a number of tread sections composed of abrading substance and fabric adapted to grip the ground in alternate sequence.
The invention comprehends means for securely clamping the tread sections together in compact annular formation so as to prevent lateral displacement and circumferential creep.
The invention resides in the novel combinations hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a transverse section v of a tire embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the tire.
Fig. 3 is a side view of an abrading section.
In this drawing the letter a designates a casing which as shown is preferably of the clencher type. On the periphery of this casing is mounted a series of sections 6 of tough fabric such as cotton duck. The cotton duck is rendered water-proof by immersing it in a solution of rubber cement. Each section has a convexed top a to contact with the ground and a concave inner portion (1 shaped to conform with the periphery of .the casing. Each of the sections is provided with two notches e one being opposite the other.
Alternate layers of abrading material 7 are arranged between the sections of cotton duck. These layer are of the same contour as the sections 6 and have notches g corresponding to the notches in the fabric. Each abrading section consists of a piece of fabric saturated or infused with a fine substance such as sand or other gritty material mixed with an adhesive. The fabric with its gritty sub- Specification of Letters Patent.

stance adhering to it is water-proofed by a gum or rubber cement as noted above.
The sections of fabric and abrading sub stance are closely packed together with their fiat faces abutting each other. These sections are securely held together by means of a metal band it shaped to correspond to the concave inner ortions of the ections. The
band is equipped with rim portions 5 to embrace the lateral portions of the sections. The band can be vulcanized directly to the circumference of the casing to prevent it from shifting or flying ofl. The ends of the rim are bent inwardly to hook or engage the notches in the sections as indicated in Fig. 1. This method of fastening the sections together obviates lateral as well as centrifugal shift of the sections relative to the band.
The diameter of the band is somewhat smaller than the casing so that when the casing is inflated the concavity of the band will frictionally engage the periphery of the easing, thus. effectively preventing movement of the band. The casing in practice does not receive its full pressure of air, so that when a part of the casing is compressed by striking an obstruction, the other portion will and thereby hug the band. When the tread sections strike a projecting stone'or rut in the roadway, the band will move centripetally and by its transverse .rigidness will compress a large area of the casing, thereby absorbing the shocks otherwise sustained by the wheel.
As indicated in the drawin the sections of water-proof fabric and a rading substance are mounted on a pneumatic casing, but it will be readily understood that the sections with slight alterations of the configuration could be made for a solid tire and directly mounted on to the rim of a wheel.
ll claim V 1. A vehicle tire comprising a plurality of flat transversely arranged side by side sections of fabric forming the tread of anlar tire, the alternate sections of which are provided with an abrading substance, and a rim for fastening the sections together.
