Abstract

High rates of heat and mass transfer may be obtd. in a single tube jacketted evaporator/conductor by applying centrifugal action to the passing gas/liq. mixt. by means of a helicoidal vane extending the length of the tube. The device may be used as a condenser by circulating cold water in the jacket, as an evaporator by passing gas upward against a downflow of liq., for evaporative cooling of a gas by co-current liq. injection in which excessive liq. may be sepd. and recycled, or for gas scrubbing applications in which liq. is used to extract solids or condensible vapours from the gas stream. In particular, the device is intended for use in the recovery of Hg from flue gases in the prodn. of Hg.
