Abstract

The flipper (10) for attaching to a swimmer's foot is made from rubber of plastics and is paddle shaped. The inner portion (12) is enlarged to form a housing (14) for the foot, held by an adjustable strap (16, 18) behind the heel. Along a line (28, 30), each side of this housing, the flipper is partly slit through from the top. The thickness left underneath forms a hinge and permits the outer flat portions (24, 26) to flex downwards. When exerting a rearwards push, the hinges close and the whole of the flipper area is used for propelling. On returning the foot forwards, the hinges open and the other portions flex inwards to reduce water resistance.
