Abstract

Each flipper comprises a pocket (1) fitting over the foot and extended to form an enlarged flattened area. The outermost part (6) of this is flexible whilst the part nearest the pocket is essentially rigid. In this part are two elongated flaps (2, 3), each being flexible about the side (4, 5) attached to the fliper. These flaps cover openings in the flipper, and increase the flexibility and effective propulsive surface of this area. On the down stroke, the flaps cover the openings; on the up stroke, each flap opens, contributing to the propulsive effort. Water flowing through the openings reduces the resistance encountered.
