Abstract

The inflatable floats are fitted to helicopters to enable them to alight on water in an emergency. The inflation of floats has a serious effect on the flight stability of the helicopter. To overcome this problem, inflatable stabilising vanes are fitted to the floats. The cylindrical foat (F) is fitted to the underside of the helicopter and is inflated by gas such as CO2, air or nitrogen from a bottle (G). The stabilising vane (1) is stitched or glued to the float (F) and is itself inflated through the orifice (13) simultaneously with the float. When inflated, the vane (1) is held rigid by the stay.
