Abstract

The wings and stabilising surfaces, for example in light aircraft are made in a collapsible form. A light covering material is stretched under tension over a light springy framework, which can be dismantled for transport. The covering is independent of the frame elements. Various surface profiles are possible, and the shapes are maintained either by preformed ribs (3a) fitted into sockets (5a) fixed on a flexible leading edge longeron (1a), or by air pressures within separate compartments formed in the structure by the covering. The whole wing is flexible and may deform in flight, like a bird's wing, to adapt to wind pressure fluctuations.
