Abstract

The attenuator comprises two polarisers between which is located a lead lanthanum zirconate titanate wafer with attached electrodes so that an electric field can be applied perpendicular to the transmission direction of the attenuator and at 45 degrees to the polarisation direction of one of the polarisers. The novelty is that it includes appts. for measuring the value of flux transmitted by the attenuator, which provides a signal controlling the voltage applied to the electrodes so that the luminous flux transmitted remain constant. The device provides protection for the human eye or photo-sensitive appts. against excessive luminous flux without altering the images perceived. The wafer pref. has the formula (Pb0.91 La0.09)(Zr0.65 Ti0.35)O3.
