Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the acousto-optic element which is capable of relatively easily setting the mutual action region with light with simple construction by providing cross finger electrodes for bulk wave excitation on a piezoelectric plate.
CONSTITUTION: Cross finger electrodes 32 are provided by using photolithography techniques on the piezoelectric plate 31 formed by the film which is nonreflection- coated at side faces 33, 34 (e.g., double thin films composed of MgF2 and SiO2), whereby the acousto-optic element is formed. The above acousto-optic element is used by electrically connecting an electrical driving circuit 38 for generating bulk waves in the piezoelectric plate 31 to the cross finger electrodes 32 and providing a detector 39 for detecting the primary difrracted light 37 of incident light 35.
