PURPOSE:To keep the temperature stability of an electro-optic crystal and to make ease of the manufacture, by avoiding natural double refraction of the electro-optic crystal through the use of bismuth silicon oxide Bi12SiO20 or the like. CONSTITUTION:Along the direction of progress of light, polarizer 2, electro-optic crystal 7, lambda/4 wave length plate 4, and polarizer 5 are arranged, and an electro- optic crystal 7 is made of Bi12SiO20. Bi12SiO20 is a crystal belonging to cubic system without natural double refraction. Thus, no temperature compensation is required. Further, the characteristics between output voltage/average photodetection power in Bi12SiO20 and temperature are flat and have a variance within several percentages. Thus, the light from Bi12SiO20 is different from the phase toward X and Y, and the output light after the lambda/4 wave length plate 4 and the photodetector 5 is subject to modulation proportional to the applied voltage. With the constitution like this, the electro-optic crystal has temperature stability and the manufacture is made easy.
