Abstract

Process for bleaching plant substances contg. cellulose by (a) chlorination; (b) leaching, and (c) post-bleaching, with washing after the individual stages. Prior to stage (a), the cellulose is treated with the reaction product of inorganic substances, the product being obtd. by sepn. out of the wash water used after stages (a+b) or (b). The material treated in stage (a) pref. contains 27-35 wt. % cellulose, and liq. Cl or a mixt. of liq. and gaseous Cl is used to control the temp. in stage (a): and instead of washing an inert gases may be used to remove the residual Cl, the pref. inert gases being air of nitrogen. Eliminates the discharge of toxic waste water into the environment by using a recirculating process. For example, the water consumption in bleaching is reduced from 200 m3/tonne cellulose material to 25-30 m3/tonne.
