Abstract

1474626 Deodorizing waste gases CIBAGEIGY AG 1 Aug 1974 [2 Aug 1973] 34050/74 Heading C1A A process for deodorizing waste gas in at least two washing stages in the presence of active chlorine comprises (a) washing a waste gas stream with a liquid containing active chlorine at pH 4-9 and subsequently (b) with a similar liquid but at pH 7-11 and 0À3 to 4 units more than the pH at (a), (c) recycling washing liquid from stage (b) to stage (a), the active chlorine being supplied in the substantial absence of chlorine dioxide, the washing liquid of at least one of (a) or (b) having an active chlorine content of at least 0À02 g./l. and active chlorine being added to stage (a) and active alkali in stage (b) in approximately the stoichiometer amount based on active chlorine added in stage (a). The waste gas may contain CO 2 . The source of active chlorine may be by the addition of Cl 2 to the waste gas or by the injection of Cl 2 into the washing liquid or aqueous hypochlorite solution. Malodorous constituents removed include amines, organic sulphur compounds and hydrogen sulphide.
