Abstract
1402709 Purification of contaminated water BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 10 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 47906/71 Heading C1C A method of treating water contaminated with organic materials comprises subjecting the water to a sterilization step, the sterile liquid so formed being mixed with a sludge activated by a micro-organism suitable for breaking down the contamination, the quantity of sludge being from 1 to 50% by weight of the mixture of sludge and sterile liquid. The mixture is then contacted with oxygen or a gas mixture containing oxygen, the sludge is separated from the liquor and at least a part of the separated sludge is recycled. The sterilization is preferably carried out by radiation or the addition of a toxic material, e.g. chlorine, ozone, potassium permanganate or sodium carbonate. The activated sludge has been activated by a selected strain of micro-organism which brings about rapid assimilation of oxygen and permits quick settling of the sludge.
