Abstract

1459284 Chlorination of organics in aqueous effluent BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Aug 1975 [25 Sept 1974] 41678/74 Heading C1C A process for treating an aqueous effluent from the dehydrochlorination of 3,4-dichlorobutene-I in an aqueous alkaline medium to give chloroprene followed by removal of any major amount of organic materials by distillation and/ or decantation comprises treating the effluent under at least initially alkaline conditions with chlorine at a temperature in excess of 50‹ C. under sufficient pressure to maintain the effluent in the liquid phase. Alkali may be added to give an initial pH of 9-14; the temperature is preferably 100‹ to 150‹ C. and the reaction time ¢ to 3 hours.
