Abstract
An absorbant body in the form of a flattened glass U-tube is housed in a glass cylinder, the width of the U-tube being 20% less than the internal dia. of the cylinder. Liq. or gas is circulated through the U-tube. The upper surface of the absorbant body has a thin film approx. 0.1 mm. thick of heat absorbing material for selective absorption of the sun's rays. On the lower surface of the absorbant body is a metallic reflecting coating. The cylinder surrounding the absorbant body is evacuated and a gas, e.g. SnCl4, having at low heat conductivity, is mixed with the residual gases at a press. of 1 to 10 mm. Hg. This gas can be the vapour given off from a liq. or solid in the cylinder. The base of the cylinder through which the two ends of the U-tube protrude is formed by pressing the heated closed end of the cylinder into a mould that has 2 holes and applying a vacuum to the mould to draw the parts of the base near to the holes into them, thus forming openings for the U-tube legs. Useful for collecting solar energy from the sun. The cell is cheap to produce and has high heat collection potential.
