Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve mechanical and thermal properties of molded polyethylene articles at low temperatures in a short time, by irradiating a molded polyethylene article of specific thickness, treated with ammonia, with electron rays having a relatively small maximum range.
CONSTITUTION: A molded polythylene article having parts of maximum thickness ≥4mm in the transmission direction of electron rays is brought into contact with ammonia so that the ammonia may diffuse uniformly in the article, then irradiated with the electron rays having the accelerating energy of the maximum range smaller than the maximum thickness of the article.
EFFECT: Electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties of molded polyethylene articles can be improved without causing minute cracks due to the irradiation with electron rays
