Abstract

This transmission box provides two output drive shafts of different speeds. If the sense of the input shaft is reversed, the sense of one of the output shafts may be reversed or the drive disconnected by operating a clutch. An input shaft is in constant mesh via a layshaft and gears with one output shaft. Another gear is mounted on a flanged sleeve which may rotate freely on the output shaft and is in mesh with a pinion on the input shaft. This pinion is free to rotate in one direction only, by virtue of an internally fitted ratchet and also has one face machined to form half of a dog clutch. The other half of the dog clutch slides axially on the input shaft under external control. When the clutch is engaged, the pinion is locked to the input shaft and the output flange thus rotates according to the direction of rotation of the input. When the clutch is disengaged, the ratchet ensures that the flange can only be driven in one direction.
