Abstract

Process for cooling a body, such as a continuously cast billets, uses an intimate mixt. of a fluid with a high density pref. drops of water, with a large amt. of a fluid with a low density, pref. air, the mixt. being projected in the form of high speed sprays onto the surface of the body being cooled. The water is pref. carried by the air to avoid the formation of a continuous film of water on the surface being cooled, the spray being projected at 90 degrees to the surface of the billet. The pref. device uses means to provide a large vol. of air travelling at high speed and means for mixing drops of water with the air. The air-water mixt. travelling at high velocity increases the cooling rate, e.g. of a steel slab.
