Abstract

Used ord. ion exchange cpd. from the clearning cycle of a nuclear reactor installation is embedded in cement by (a) mixing the particles of the ion exchange cpd. with cement, (b) incorporating in the miext., before the cement solidifies a material (I) capable of blocking the penetration of water towards the particles of ion exchange cpd., and (c) allowing the cement in the mixt. to solidify in a container. Swelling of the particles of ion exchange cpd. is practically eliminated as a result of the presence of (I). This prevents weakening/disintegration of the concrete block. The block retains its initial structure for longer periods. (I) is dispersed or dissolved in water before adding to the mixt. (I) is pref. a linear polymer e.g. polyvinyl propionate a crosslinkable polymer, e.g. an epoxy resin, water-glass or another alkali metal silicate, a hydrolysable org. silicate or an org. ester of a higher fatty acid. 0.1-20 pts. wt. (I) are used for 100 pts. wt. cement.
