Abstract

1333250 Polyester resin capsules EXCHEM HOLDINGS Ltd 14 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 49606/70 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A resin capsule comprises a frangible longitudinally extending casing having disposed therein an unsaturated polyester resin system substantially in contact with a catalyst component and an activator component, the catalyst and activator components being such that, whilst they are substantially unmixed the catalyst and activator remain substantially inert with respect to the resin system so that there is substantially no formation of gelled or cured resin at any interface with the resin system, on intimate mixing of both the catalyst component and the activator component with the polyester resin system the catalyst is caused to become activated by physical or chemical means with consequent curing of the unsaturated polyester resin. The catalyst and activator components may be disposed as separate entities within the casing, the catalyst being rendered stable with respect to the polyester resin system prior to mixing therewith by having a pH lower than that on which the catalyst will cure the system, and the activator component being a basic material incapable alone of initiating polymerization of the system at ambient temperatures. The catalyst and activator components may be combined to form a substantially anhydrous single entity within the casing, there being a water component present as a separate entity within the casing. In the examples polyester resin systems comprising a polyester prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, propylene glycol and diethylene glycol, hydroquinone, styrene, pyrogenic silica and calcite; catalyst components comprising ammonium persulphate, water, ethylene oxide nonyl phenol condensate, glycerine, calcite, pyrogenic silica, dibutyl phthalate, sodium persulphate, castor oil and dolomite; activator components comprising calcium hydroxide, water, glycerine, calcite and triethanolamine; a catalyst/activator component comprising ammonium persulphate, Portland cement, ethylene oxide nonyl phenol condensate, dibutyl phthalate and calcite and a water component comprising hydroxyethyl cellulose, water and calcite are placed in polyester tubular films. The capsules are placed in drill holes in concrete, or coal face and a block of carboniferous limestone and wooden dowels and mild steel bolts are rotated in the holes to mix the components of the capsules and cement the dowels or bolts in position.
