Abstract
Refractory welding electrode made of tungsten or thoriated tungsten, provided with a central insert for promoting electron emission and contg. above (all wt. %) 20% ThO2, and over 35% tungsten. The insert or core extends over at least half of the length of the electrode. The insert may extend through the entire electrode and between the insert and the outer sleeve a zone is pref. provided consisting of a mixt. of the materials of which the core and sleeve are made. The core is pref. included in the powdered mass forming the sleeve when the electrode blank is made, followed by hot pressing and conventional methods of electrode mfr. Permits the repeated regrinding and re-use of the electrode; this repetition is impossible when only a short insert is used.
