Abstract

A mixture for making electrodes for use in air-carbon arc cutting and gouging comprises at least 50 wt.% of a graphite and/or carbon black; a binder and 2 to 20 wt.% of a thermionic emitter. Suitable thermionic emitters are, among others, rare earth elements, and compounds thereof and alkaline earth elements and compounds thereof. The use of a thermionic emitter results in electrodes which generate less noise during d.c. air-carbon arc cutting and gouging than a comparative electrode without the thermionic emitter.
