Abstract
1362429 Crystalline fibres ARTHUR D LITTLE Inc 27 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 40417/71 Heading BIS [Also in Division C1] Refractory fibres, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , ThO 2 , ZrO 2 , GaAs, GaP, B or Si, are prepared in a zonemelting process by continuously withdrawing a fibre from a molten zone formed by continuously feeding a rod of the refractory into the heated region whilst maintaining (a) the product of drawing velocity, fraction of fibre theoretical density and cross-sectional area equal to the product of feed rod velocity, fraction of feed rod, (b) radius of feed rod: radius of fibre #6.7 and (c) height of molten zone: radius of fibre #5.7. Fibres 13 may be continuously pulled from the molten zone 12 formed by feeding rod 10 into the heating zone 11. The feed rod may be produced by extruding powder at 32, and zone passed through a preliminary heating zone 36 to remove binders. The feed rod may be heated in a pressurized fluid-tight chamber containing a molten inert liquid, e.g. B 2 O 3 , BaO, BaCl 2 or NaF (see Fig. 7). Heating may be by W or C filaments providing a temp. of 2400-3,000‹C, an arc struck between an electrode and the rod, an r.f. coil, a CO 2 -laser, thermal imaging, gas discharge, electron beams or flames. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1,226,473.
