Abstract

Machine for cutting the stalks off mushrooms comprises a portion in which the mushrooms are floated on water to bring them, one by one, into a predetermined position with regard to the means provided for carrying them to the cutters. The mushrooms travel in vibrating gutters, fed with water, and on belts provided for presenting them to the cutters. The belts have a gap which allows the passage of the greater number of the mushrooms but excludes those which exceed a predetermined dia. The cutting end of the machine has a first conveyor circulating around pulleys with horizontal shafts, these shafts, form a triangular frame which is partly counterbalanced by the spring. The stalk of the mushroom makes contact with the inclined belt; it is lifted and its head lifts the first conveyor and its supporting frame. At the moment the mushroom comes to the right of the pulley its stalk is engaged between two circular cutters and is severed at the extreme end, carrying the earth and the mycelium. Passing onwards another belt brings the mushroom to a suitable height for cutting by the circular blades so that the length of stalk remaining conforms to a fixed standard. The removal of the stalks in bulk by the machine effects a considerable saving in man-power. The portion of the stalk recovered can be utilised.
