Abstract

A double twisting spindle comprises a stub-spindle on which is mounted a hollow spindle carrying a yarn package so that as the stub spindle is rotated by a belt contacting a main drive pulley, the yarn passes from the package and through tension blocking device at the top of the hollow spindle and then downwardly through spindle. The yarn passes from the base of the hollow spindle through a yarn guide rotating with the stub-spindle and then upwardly to e.g. a pig-tail guide above the two spindles, so that the yarn forms a balloon around the package. The package is supported on a platform connected to the stub-spindle and is surrounded by a protection pot. Beneath the main drive pulley is provided an auxiliary pulley driven by a belt at a rotational speed slightly slower than the rotational speed of the main drive pulley. The auxiliary pulley has an inner surface provided with a gear ring with which engages a satellite gear having at its upper end a yarn guide duct through which the yarn passes between the base of the hollow spindle and the yarn guide. The tension of the yarn in the balloon is reduced thereby allowing the device to operate at higher speeds and reducing yarn breakages.
