Abstract
Sand-bed type filter employing a number of grain sizes of media should be arranged such that flow is through the largest grain bed first to remove coarse material and through the finest grain bed last. Bed materials are chosen so that they separate by gravity into beds of particle size required for efficient filtration, i.e. flow is through beds of decreasing grain size. To replace conventional sand-bed and mixed media filters in the treatment of water.
